Eyelash, is this a simple hair?

The main function for eyelashes is to protect they eyes, but is this the only function they have? Is this just another type of hair? Although they play an important role on the beauty of our look, they keep being very mysterious. Eyelashes are able to perform their function in the best way by working as an antenna detecting any foreign or dangerous element that comes too close to the cornea of the eye, so the reflex action of blinking can be immediately activated to protect the eye.

The lifecycle of an eyelash

Each eye has as an average about two hundred eyelashes on the upper lid, which are born, grow and develop inside a bulb in a similar way to hair. When the life of an eyelash ends up (the lifecycle of one eyelash can last from three to five months) it falls, but its replacement is already in formation. Just like what happens to hair, eyelashes can change of color whit the age, since they are of the same color as hair, when hair turns whitish then the same thing happens to eyelashes. The size of an eyelash does not define how healthy it will be. The root and hair bulb are the most delicate and fragile parts, since if they result to be seriously damaged (because of factors such as bad nourishment, stress, makeup remover of bad quality among others) they can stop the production of hair follicles. In such a case the line of eyelashes will be very sparse. Eyelashes of the upper lid are more numerous than the lashes of the lower lid.

Conditions that affect eyelashes

The structure of an eyelash is very similar to the structure of hair on any other part of the body, therefore the causes that affect hair and cause hair loss can also have incidence over eyelashes, even if the person is infected with lice, the infection can also affect eyelashes; in such a case dermatologists and ophthalmologists recommend the use of especial products to remove those agents. In fact the disease does not affect the eyelash itself but the root of it. On the base of eyelashes we can find the same infections that are affecting the scalp. In other words, the root of eyelashes can be affected by conditions such as stye, fungal infections or baldness.

If the person receives an implant of eyelashes, there could emerge some problems too. If the eyelashes or the eyebrows are not implanted in an adequate way, there can be some friction with the cornea which can lead to the emergence of an ulcer. If that is the case, a depilation of eyelashes will be required, or in other case if that does not work the surgical procedure must be repeated in order to start over the implant. Considered the previous complications it is very important to choose natural and safe products both for eyelashes care and for their aesthetics in order to prevent situations.
